Variable temperature X-ray single crystal diffraction allows exploration of phase transitions in Ga-substituted Gd5Ge4 phases. Ga changes the valence electron count (lowers it) which causes the formation of main group dimers between the fundamental slabs. These bonds can also be made by cooling and heating.
